Winter 2025 Health Science Immersion Program (HSIP)
 

This winter, our Health Science Immersion Program (HSIP) will give high school students an introduction to the academic, research and professional aspects of the health sciences field. Students will hear talks from experienced professors, graduate students, and health professionals about their work. There will also be a group research project about cancer research, neuroscience & human anatomy. During leadership workshops, students will learn about how their unique personality types affect how they function within teams. Throughout the program, we will explore pathways to various college experiences and career outcomes as students learn more about their personal and professional goals. Winter 2025 HSIP will be a transformative opportunity to learn.

The program entails 9 Saturday sessions via a Zoom Virtual Classroom beginning January 4th through March 1st, 2025

We are looking for adults and teens (junior/seniors) who want to become more engaged and knowledgeable about our city. LMB is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1992. Its purpose is to cultivate public, civic and business leaders through a 9-month program providing participants with hands-on experience regarding the current issues affecting the local economy, education, health care, non-profits, government and public services. They explore the community through face-to-face meetings with top leaders in these fields. Leadership skills are focused on and developed through a series of lectures, seminars and retreats. The program culminates in a project chosen by the class benefiting the City of Manhattan Beach. Each class gives back with a project that improves the community in which we live.

MBUSD Medical Advisory Board -  Student Members Needed!
MBUSD Medical Advisory Board History
-The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Medical Advisory Board is a unique committee of South Bay medical professionals who work together to promote mutual respect and interaction between the Manhattan Beach Unified School District and the health care community. 
-This committee is comprised of approximately thirty physicians and other health service professionals who represent a broad range of specialties.
-This distinguished body meets three times a year with school and district administrators, district nurses, the superintendent, and members of the MBUSD Board of Trustees to review current medical challenges as they pertain to the education, physical and mental well-being of all students in the district, preschool through grade twelve.
Youth Medical Advisory Board members will:
-Offer recommendations on youth health issues
-Provide feedback and input on Medical Advisory Board meeting topics
-Serve as ambassadors and leaders of health
MBUSD Students currently in Grades 10th and 11th are eligible to apply. 
Medical Advisory Board meetings will be held at the Manhattan Beach Unified School District Office located at 325 S. Peck Ave, Manhattan Beach from 7:00pm-9:00pm three times a year.

MB Mayor's Youth Council
The MB Mayor's Youth Council will soon be recruiting high school students for next year's program, which begins in September 2024 and runs through April 2025.
Mayor's Youth Council is an exciting program that brings together high school students and professional leaders to explore leadership, careers, and civic engagement. Selected students will meet monthly and have the opportunity to meet and dialogue with leaders in numerous industries, government, arts and more!  The students will also participate in a City-sponsored event. This group of students have also been running the TEDx Salon event at Mira Costa. This program is now entering its 8th year and the program has expanded to 40 students.  
They are looking for candidates who are willing to make the time commitment, step outside their comfort zone, participate in our workshops and have fun! 
Criteria to Apply:
1.     Student must be a resident of Manhattan Beach or attend Mira Costa High School
2.     The program is open to students who will enter the 2024-2025 school year this Fall as a Sophomore, Junior and or Senior
3.     Students are only allowed to miss one meeting to remain in good standing and are expected to commit to the following dates if accepted: TBA
4.     There is a registration fee which helps cover dinner and supplies for each workshop.

They are seeking curious, engaged students who have a full understanding of what this program is about and are willing to commit to this program. They do allow 1 absence due to a conflict per student, otherwise students do not receive credit on their website for completing the program. 


Online applications for the 2024-25 Manhattan Beach Youth Council class of students will open on March 23. T
he application will close when 80 applications have been received. It is recommended that students apply in the first 2-3 days of the application opening.  All students will have the opportunity to interview, and applicants are encouraged to apply again if they did not make it in their sophomore or junior year.
