STUDENT INFO           

·         If you worked hard last semester and received fantastic grades, you may be eligible for CSF! The membership drive will begin on Monday, Jan. 23 and end Friday, Feb. 3. Come to Room 243 to pick up an application and ask questions. Freshmen are invited to become an “Associate Member.”

·         Come one, come all! If you have a talent in rap, African-American dance, the blues, or any other talents associated with African-American culture, you should consider showcasing your talent in the Black History Month Assembly, scheduled for Feb 23. Whether it’s singing, dancing or playing an instrument, you have the opportunity to share your unique talent with other Costa students. Auditions will be held on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 4 pm in Room 74. People of all backgrounds are welcome to audition.

·         Winter Formal Tickets are on sale now in the Student Store. Come by during snack or lunch to pick up your permission form.  Prices go up after TODAY so get your tickets now. Ticket vouchers are also available on the ASB Webstore.

·         If you’d like to contribute to social inclusion and help represent different cultures, submit a proposal to the Our Beauty Convention! You can propose a monologue, video, song, poem, or any other creative idea. Submission forms can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/hg63roq.

·         What’s hilarious, constantly surprising, and based on your suggestions? Tonight’s Play, MCHS’s first fully improvised play! Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students, and can be purchased online at miracostadramaboosters.org, in Room 1, or at the door. This awesome event runs NEXT weekend only – 7:30pm Friday 1/27 and 2pm & 7:30pm Saturday 1/28! Mark your calendars for next weekend!

·         Students who have excused periods (other than zero period): Off-grounds stickers are available starting Monday, 1/23 in the main office at snack, lunch, or before or after school ONLY. You MUST have a current school ID to get a sticker.

·         AP Students: Registration for the Advanced Placement exams will take place Jan. 23 through Jan. 27 during lunch only at the Student Store. The registration fee is $98 per exam. Late registration will be held Jan. 30 through Feb. 3 during lunch only at the Student Store, but an extra $15 late fee for each exam will be charged. Be sure to bring your completed blue worksheet indicating the exams you will be taking, cash or check made out to MCHS for the reg fee, and a pen to complete the actual reg form. New This Year: Online registration is available NOW. Go to ASB webstore on the MCHS website. A credit card is required for online registration.

·         Need Community Service Hours? Our first Lunches with Love delivery of the year is Sunday, Jan. 22. We feed the homeless on Skid Row with your bagged lunches. Five lunches = one community service hour. We are also holding a toiletry drive. Please collect mini or full size toiletries from friends, family, school, church for our Feb. delivery. ·         Hermosa Valley School is looking for HVS alumni to be Cabin Leaders for the 6th Grade Outdoor Science School in Malibu. Outdoor School will take place from Monday, Mar. 13 to Friday, Mar. 17. Cabin leaders can earn 100 community service hours. The applicant deadline is Friday, Jan. 27, so that we can have a crew and alternates in place. Please contact Mr. Hecker ASAP at [email protected].

FACULTY

·         Please release the following teams TODAY, Jan. 20Boys’ Soccer (all levels) at 1:00pm; Girls’ Basketball (JV) at 1:50pm; Girls’ Soccer (JV/V) at 1:30pm; Girls’ Water Polo (V) at 10:15am.

SPORTS

·      Swim Team Tryouts for all new and returning swimmers will be held Thursday, Jan. 26 at 2 pm. There will be a make-up tryout offered on Monday, Jan. 30 at 7:00 am. We want to encourage all swimmers, including club swimmers and water polo players, to try out and participate this season. CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS

·      Come to Mental Health Awareness Club Tuesdays in Mr. Wheeler’s Room 22 to bring awareness about these struggles.

·      Interested in competing in Computer Science? Do you know your Java? Come to Room 116 after school on 1/24 or during PM office hours on 1/25 and try out for the Codequest Team.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER

·      VISITS: Monday, Jan. 23El Camino College Information Session & Application Workshop during lunch (12:20 pm) in the CCC.

·      PSAT SCORE PICK-UP If you took the October 19th PSAT, your score sheets are now available for pick-up in the CCC.

·      SeniorsThe MCHS Scholarship Notebook Program will begin this month. If you wish to participate, you will be required to attend ONE of the MANDATORY January lunchtime meetings – LAST MEETING on 1/24. This program allows donors to view your notebook and award local community scholarships. Detailed information is available on the MCHS Website→College Tab→Senior-To-Do Tab. Please sign-up on Naviance to attend one of the meetings and bring $7 to purchase notebooks. 

·      FEATURED SUMMER PROGRAM: Spring Break Tech Camps at CSU Dominguez Hills – Video Game Design & Animation.  Students will learn the step-by-step process for creating compelling digital illustrations under the guidance of instructor Robert Dillworth, a noted entertainment industry designer. Study Topics: History of computer games, designing an original character, storyboarding from idea to pencil and paper, animated effects using flash basics, designing backgrounds, and sound effects with Flash. ·      Career Speaker Series – Beginning this month! Professionals in various industries will visit the CCC to speak about their careers and the path they took to get there. This is a great opportunity to learn about different careers and the steps you need to take to gain opportunities for internships and to land your dream job. Please sign-up on Naviance or in the CCC.
