STUDENT INFO           

  • Attention Students! Winter formal permission slips will be available in Room 40, 41 and the student store starting January 13.
  • Hermosa Valley School is looking for HVS alumni to be Cabin Leaders for the 6th Grade Outdoor Science School in Malibu. Outdoor School will take place from Monday, Mar. 14 to Friday, Mar. 18. It may be possible to earn Community Service credits. The applicant deadline is Friday, Jan. 29. Please contact Mr. Hecker at [email protected].
  •  Attention Students: Talent show auditions will take place on Monday, Jan. 25 and Tuesday, Jan. 26 in the auditorium from 1-4 pm.
  • Discover South Africa during Spring Break 2017: If you’re interested in this life-changing adventure, see Mr. Cox during PM office hours on Wednesday, 1/13, or email [email protected] for details.
  • The Second Semester After-School Jazz Program is starting up. Interested individuals that play Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums, Saxophone, Trombone or Trumpet should go to www.miracostabands.com under the “Second Semester Jazz” tab for more information. A clinic session on the assessment material will be offered for those with little or no Jazz experience on Thursday, January 14 in Room 4, right after school from 3 – 4 pm.
  • Please join us for a Maker Fair in the library from 3 pm – 5 pm on Thursday for activities from the Geeks, Library Club, Girls Coding Club, and Robotics Club. Have fun with 3D printing, programming Sphero and BB-8, making pinwheels and art from recycled books, littleBit electronics, Google Cardboard and more. Refreshments, too!
  • Interested in going to London for Spring Break? See Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Hampton Court, the bloody tower of London, Stonehenge, and Windsor Castle. See major shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, the London Philharmonic at the Royal Albert Hall, and more!   • The Neptunian Woman’s Club of Manhattan Beach is sponsoring its 38th Student Art and Photography Contest for grades K-5 (art) and 6-12 (art and photography). Entry forms are available in the front office. Deadline for submission to the school office is February 22, 2016 before 3 pm. An awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 1 pm in the Neptunian clubhouse.
  • Attention musicians: Applications for the spring musical pit orchestra are now being accepted. Experienced pianists and rhythm section players are needed. For complete information and applications, visit mchspitorchestra.weebly.com.
  • TEDx is coming to Costa! Stop by the small theatre this Wednesday during second office hours to hear senior Miriam Sachs talk on creativity.

SPORTS

  • Mira Costa Hockey: Interested in playing hockey for Mira Costa? There will be a short informational meeting Friday, Jan. 15 at lunch in Room 242.
  • Make-up Swim Team tryouts will be on Friday, 1/22/16 at 4 pm. See Mrs. Santarosa in the Counseling Office for details.
  • Any boys who are interested in playing Golf during 2nd semester need to come to Room 410 during lunch TODAY or Wednesday to sign up for tryouts.
  • Girls’ Lacrosse will be having their final tryout on 1/20 & 1/21 at 4:30 – 6 pm at the stadium field. You must have a mouth guard to participate. Also, bring lacrosse stick, goggles, cleats and running shoes.
  • Final Boys’ Volleyball tryouts will be held at 6 pm in Fisher Gym TODAY, Jan. 12.
  • Baseball Tryouts for all freshmen and any new baseball players will be Tuesday 1/19, Wednesday 1/20 and Thursday 1/21 at 3 pm on the Baseball Field. Any questions, contact Coach Olson at [email protected].
  • Tryouts for the CIF-placing Mira Costa Badminton Team will be held on TODAY and Wednesday, Jan.12 and 13, at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club from 4 pm until 6 pm. Badminton is one of a few true co-ed teams and encourages both males and females to tryout. FACULTY

  • Attention Teachers: Please remember to fill out your Scholar Breakfast forms and return them to Mrs. Claypoole’s mailbox by Jan. 18. Thank you.
  • Attention Staff Members: Please complete your Mira Costa Core Values Staff Survey as soon as possible. They are due Friday, 1/15 by the end of the day. Thank you.

CLUBS/ORGANIZATIONS

  • TODAY at lunch in Room 74, K-Pop club will be having a meeting for the Lip Sync. Anyone is welcome to join. We would love to see you there.
  • Come to Pink Ribbon Club in Room 78 on Thursday at lunch to discuss upcoming events! New members are welcomed.
  • The Library Club meets during lunch in the library lunchroom TODAY. Everyone is welcome.
  • Dance your way down to Room 79 for Dance Club TODAY.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER

  • PSAT results are now available online at www.collegeboard.org. You will need to set up a College Board account if you don’t already have one. If you need an access code to view your results, we now have them in the CCC.  The score sheets should arrive in the CCC within the next few weeks and we will notify you as soon as they are available for pick up.
  • College Visits:

  • Los Angeles Pediatric Society Eve and Gene Black Summer Medical Center Internship Program A free medical mentor internship program: Under the supervision of a health care educator/medical facility coordinator, participants shadow various medical professionals (nurse, nutritionist, pharmacist, lab tech and/or physician, etc.) who provide a range of patient care services.   • SoCal Roc is beginning spring enrollment. Spring Class Schedules are available in the CCC. Sign up in the CCC to meet with the SoCal Roc Counselor or drop in on Mondays during snack.
  • SENIORS

o  Scholarship Notebooks – We are fortunate to have many donors in the area that provide scholarships to Mira Costa students. In order to apply for these scholarships, you must attend one scholarship notebook meeting in January (1/14 or 1/21), and purchase the notebooks for $7.  Please sign up on Naviance.  All forms are posted on the MCHS website: college tabsenior to-do’sscholarship notebook.

o  The new FAFSA is now available online at fafsa.ed.gov.

  • PJ TEST PREP is offering free practice SAT, New SAT and ACT tests on Jan. 23 and Jan. 30 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at the LAX Holiday Inn Express.
