- The Second Semester After-School Jazz Program is starting up. Interested individuals that play Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums, Saxophone, Trombone or Trumpet should go to www.miracostabands.com under the “Second Semester Jazz” tab for more information. A clinic session on the assessment material will be offered for those with little or no Jazz experience on Thursday, January 14 in Room 4, right after school from 3 – 4 pm.
- Please join us for a Maker Fair in the library from 3 pm – 5 pm on Thursday for activities from the Geeks, Library Club, Girls Coding Club, and Robotics Club. Have fun with 3D printing, programming Sphero and BB-8, making pinwheels and art from recycled books, littleBit electronics, Google Cardboard and more. Refreshments, too!
- Interested in going to London for Spring Break? See Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Hampton Court, the bloody tower of London, Stonehenge, and Windsor Castle. See major shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, the London Philharmonic at the Royal Albert Hall, and more! Airfare, accommodations, all tours, transfers, and transportation included for only $2,700! - The Neptunian Woman’s Club of Manhattan Beach is sponsoring its 38th Student Art and Photography Contest for grades K-5 (art) and 6-12 (art and photography). Entry forms are available in the front office. Deadline for submission to the school office is February 22, 2016 before 3 pm. An awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 1 pm in the Neptunian clubhouse.
- Attention musicians: Applications for the spring musical pit orchestra are now being accepted. Experienced pianists and rhythm section players are needed. For complete information and applications, visit mchspitorchestra.weebly.com.
- TEDx is coming to Costa! Stop by the small theatre next Wednesday during second office hours to hear senior Miriam Sachs talk on creativity.
SPORTS
- Any boys who are interested in playing golf during 2nd semester need to come to Room 410 during lunch this week TODAY, Tuesday or Wednesday to sign up for tryouts.
- Girls’ lacrosse will be having their final tryout on 1/20 & 1/21 at 4:30 – 6 pm at the stadium field. You must have a mouthguard to participate. Also, bring lacrosse stick, goggles, cleats and running shoes.
- Come to Cultures Unite Club every Monday (TODAY) in Room 52 to learn about some really great cultures.
- Final Boys’ Volleyball tryouts will be held at 6 pm in Fisher Gym on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
- Baseball Tryouts for all freshman and any new baseball players will be Tuesday 1/19, Wednesday 1/20 and Thursday 1/21 at 3 pm on the Baseball Field. Any questions, contact Coach Olson at [email protected].
- Tryouts for the CIF-placing Mira Costa Badminton Team will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan.12 and 13, at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club from 4 pm until 6 pm. Badminton is one of a few true co-ed teams and encourages both males and females to tryout. A free medical mentor internship program: Under the supervision of a health care educator/medical facility coordinator, participants shadow various medical professionals (nurse, nutritionist, pharmacist, lab tech and/or physician, etc.) who provide a range of patient care services. - SoCal Roc is beginning spring enrollment. Spring Class Schedules are available in the CCC. Sign up in the CCC to meet with the SoCal Roc Counselor.
- SENIORS
- Scholarship Notebooks – We are fortunate to have many donors in the area that provide scholarships to Mira Costa students. In order to apply for these scholarships, you must attend one scholarship notebook meeting in January (1/14 or 1/21), and purchase the notebooks for $7. Please sign up on Naviance. - The new FAFSA is now available online at fafsa.ed.gov.
- PJ TEST PREP is offering free practice SAT, New SAT and ACT tests on Jan. 23 and Jan. 30 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at the LAX Holiday Inn Express.
