STUDENT INFORMATION
• Attention Basketball Fans - Come show your Costa Pride at the season opener against West on Tuesday night at Fisher Gym. Girls varsity starts at 6:00 and Boys varsity starts at 7:30pm. MCHS athletic department will give away a free Costa Pride T-shirt to the first 100 students with ID who come to the 6:00 game!
• The Mira Costa Library will be hosting Andrea Cremer, best-selling author of the Nightshade series, on Friday, January 13 during Period 6. Students are invited to attend. You need to get a signed permission slip if you have a Period 6 class. Come by the library for information, to sign up, and if you would like to borrow or purchase Cremer’s books. There is also information on the library blog at miracostahighlibrary.edublogs.org.
Also be sure to visit the library to view the display of 2-Perspective art by Ms. Martin’s Art students and our “Read the book … See the movie” display.
• Poetry Out Loud: Wednesday, January 11th at 7 pm in the library. Come enjoy a free night of poetry recitation!
• Save a Bottle! Save the World! Bring your used plastic bottles to the student store at lunch every day this week!
• Students are invited to submit their work to the California Coastal Commission’s annual Art & Poetry Contest. Art & Poetry must have a California coastal theme to be eligible. Entries must be postmarked by January 31, 2012. More info in room 76.
• Young Naturalist Awards 2012 is a research-based science contest for students sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History. This is a chance to demonstrate your knowledge of “Scientific Inquiry”. The deadline for research essays is March 9, 2012. More info in room 76.
• Attention Students: We are ready to go school wide with providing you the ability to print on campus.
1. The printer is accessed by sending a .doc or .pdf file to [email protected]
2. Students may pick up work between 7:30-8:00 at the counter in the copy room, or at the Student Store during lunch only.
3. The cost for print jobs is 10 cents per side for the copies.
4. Students need to put their name and student ID number in the subject line of the email.
5. Unclaimed print jobs will be charged to the student’s account in ASB.
We will be closely monitoring the impact of this system on the copy room, to include how it impacts teacher usage. We will make necessary adjustments as we go to ensure that both students and teachers have the best possible copier experience.
• The Mira Costa Counselors present: The Survive, Strive and Thrive Workshop. This great interactive workshop is for all Mira Costa students focusing on how to achieve a healthy balance between reaching your academic goals AND taking care of yourself. The Guidance Counselors are presenting Kelly Mothner, former Mira Costa Alumni on Wednesday, January 11th at 7 pm in the guidance conference room. We hope to see you there!!
• Hermosa Valley School is looking for HVS alumni to be Cabin Leaders for the 6th grade Outdoor Science School in Malibu. Outdoor School will take place from Monday, March 12 to Friday, March 16.
It may be possible to earn Community Service credits. The applicant deadline is Friday, January 27.
• Tryouts for the 2012 Mira Costa Badminton team for both girls and boys will be next Tuesday and Wednesday, January 10th and 11th from 4 to 6 pm at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club - 516 18th Street Manhattan Beach. See Dr. Wilson in Room 57 for more details.
• Track try outs will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 11th and 12th at 3:15. Come to track dressed to run.
• New time and location for Mira Costa’s first ever Poetry Out Loud Competition, 7 pm in the library on January 11th! Come enjoy a free night of amazing poetry!

SENIORS
• All graduating seniors are invited to complete a Scholarship Notebook. Notebooks will be reviewed by various local scholarship committees. Any student who wants to complete a Scholarship Notebook MUST come to one of the following informational meetings in the CCC during lunch on January 10 or 18. Notebooks will be due February 29th.
• Seniors: Would you like to spend the summer working with leading biomedical scientists?
Applications are now being accepted for The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute Summer Fellowship Program. Applications are in room 76 and are due March 9, 2012.
