STUDENT INFORMATION
• From the Library: It’s Teen Tech Week, a national celebration sponsored by the Young Adult division of the American Library Association. To celebrate, come by the library any time this week, complete a fun, easy scavenger hunt, and you’ll be entered in a prize drawing. Also, come to the library during lunch on Tuesday to learn about a cool tech tool, Wordle.net, that let’s you make beautiful, easy word clouds. Mrs. Lofton will share how to use this fun word cloud tool at 12:30 on Tuesday. So, please eat quickly and come to the library right after. Computers will be reserved for the Wordle session during lunch on Tuesday.
• The California Scholarship Federation Membership Drive is March 1 – 18th
Applications may be picked up in room 76 or in the front office beginning March 1st. All applications must be turned in to Mrs. Cunningham in room 76 by the March 18th deadline.
CSF Seniors: Don’t forget this membership period is the last one you need to become a sealbearer at graduation!
• Student art finalists who submitted entries for the Neptunian Art Contest are requested to pick up their submissions as soon as possible from the Guidance Office. Thank you.
• WANT THE PRESTIGE of having YOUR ART on the cover of MIRA COSTA’s STUDENT PLANNER NEXT YEAR AND WIN a $100 American Express GIFT CERTIFICATE? 3 Mira Costa students’ art will be featured on next year’s student planner cover, and each of the 3 artists will win a $100 American Express gift card!
To enter, submit your vision of Mira Costa in any medium (pencil, paint, graphics, etc.) in a 5 x 8 format to Shari Humphrey in the admin. bldg. by March 31st. Express yourself using any colors, designs, and school appropriate creativity. All entries will be displayed, and faculty and students will each have 1 vote to nominate the three winners. The contest is open to all current Mira Costa students. Previously submitted designs are welcome. You may enter as many pieces as you want.
CLUBS / ORGANIZATIONS
• If you are interested in joining the yearbook staff next year, applications are available in the yearbook room, Room 9, and in the office.
• Come join Eco Club in Room 73 at lunch TODAY. All new members are welcome.
SENIORS
• Applications for Senior Graduation speakers are now available through Mrs. Lee-Iwai and will be due on March 25th.
SPORTS
COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER
• Any senior who completed a Scholarship Notebook needs to come into the CCC to self nominate yourself for the many scholarships offered. This should be completed by March 15th in order to be considered for scholarships.
We are accepting nominations for Three El Camino Community College Scholarships:
Foundation Scholarship: Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
Nursing Scholarship: Students must major in Nursing and have a minimum GPA of 3.5.
Chemistry Scholarship: Students must major in Chemistry and have a minimum GPA of 3.5.
Come to the CCC to nominate your self for these scholarships if you meet the criteria and are planning on attending El Camino in the fall.
The city of Manhattan Beach is accepting applications for the Manhattan Beach Youth Recognition Award. This scholarship is awarded to MCHS juniors and seniors who have volunteered in the community. Information is available in the CCC. Applications can be found at www.citymb.info. Applications are due in to the City of Manhattan Beach by Monday, March 21, 2011.
The Princeton Review will be offering practice AP exams in the Mira Costa High School Library on Saturday, March 26th. These tests are being offered to students for free! Princeton Review will provide all registered students with a proctored exam and a complete score report emailed home within 2 weeks of the test. For those students who wish to have their short answer/long answer/essay portion graded with comments and suggestions from our AP tutors, there is an optional charge of $50 per test. A limited number of seats and tests are available, so students must pre-register at www.princetonreview.com/events. FACULTY
• One department chair in each department should have a packet for Student of the Year materials in their box. Please notify Bill Fauver if you didn’t receive one. There will be a special meeting to select the Student of the Year on Tuesday, March 8th at 2:15 in the guidance conference Room. Please have at least one department chair attend that short but important meeting.
