STUDENT INFO
· For those interested in playing ice hockey this Spring, please attend a meeting next Wednesday the 17th at lunchtime in Mr. Oystrick’s classroom, Room 242 Science Building.
· Come join us at the Comedy Sportz Match THIS FRIDAY at 7 pm in the new theater. Start off your 2018 the right way!
· The Creative Writing and Art 2 and 3 classes invite all students and staff to a new art show titled “Draw and Write: Dark and Light.” The show is open TODAY, Jan. 16-24 at lunch in the gallery Room 60.
· Students who have excused periods (other than zero period): Off-grounds stickers are available starting TODAY, 1/16 in the main office at snack, lunch, or before or after school ONLY. You MUST have a current school ID to get a sticker.
· Attention instrumentalists! Applications are now being accepted for the spring musical pit orchestra. Information can be found at mchspitorchestra.weebly.com, and applications are due on Jan. 18
· Nominations are open! Co-hosted by the City of Hermosa Beach and Leadership Hermosa, the annual Emerging Leader Awards recognize up-and-coming leaders in our community. We are currently taking nominations for Youth (under 18). Find a program description and submit your nomination at http://bit.ly/2yutfA8. The deadline to nominate is Jan. 17, 2018.
· Club Day is Wednesday, January 17, at lunch in the quad. Don’t forget to bring money!
SPORTS
· Girls’ Beach Volleyball Tryouts will be Wednesday and Friday, January 17 & 19, from 2:30 to 4:00 pm at 2nd Street in Manhattan Beach. Please note the time change. It is only necessary to attend one of the two tryout dates. Practices: Mondays & Wednesdays from 2:15 – 4:15 pm. First Practice: Monday, January 22. Questions? · Try out for the Costa Badminton Team! Tryouts will be held TODAY/Tuesday & Wednesday, Jan. 16 & 17 from 4 – 5:30pm at 516 18th Street in Manhattan Beach.
CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS
· Drama Club is every Wednesday during lunch in Room 1. Come and learn about new and exciting things that are coming up in the Drama/Tech Department!
· I is for Insightful, M is for Magical, P is for imProv Club, every Tuesday during lunch in Room 1!
· Come to Together We Tutor in Room 19 on Wednesday at lunch to earn community service hours and learn to tutor underprivileged kids.
· Interested in joining the Costa Badminton Team? Come to Badminton Club on Tuesdays (TODAY) during lunch in Mr. Kelley’s Room 332 to learn more!
COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER
· PSAT SCORES – If you took the PSAT in October, your detailed score sheets and test booklets are now available in the CCC for pick-up.
· PSAT, Now What? Presentation – Tuesday, Jan. 23, 5:30pm in the CCC.
The PSAT is a student’s first step in the standardized testing and college application process. When utilized properly, the PSAT can propel students on their journey to college. Learn how to interpret the PSAT score report, what your child’s PSAT scores indicate about their future SAT/ACT performance, how the National Merit Scholarship Competition works, and more. Jean Stroud, Academic Advisor at Revolution Prep, will explain. Please bring your student’s PSAT scores. Both parents and students are encouraged to attend. · SENIORS
Scholarship Notebook Program The scholarship notebook is a personal profile that will be read by members of community scholarship committees. Each scholarship committee creates their own criteria for selection and carefully screens the applicants to find the appropriate candidates for their scholarships. To be eligible to participate in the program students must attend ONE of the following two remaining information meetings held in the CCC during lunch: Thursday, Jan. 18; Monday, Jan. 22. Sign-up on Naviance prior to the meeting to be admitted. Please bring $7 to purchase folders.
El Camino Assessment Testing at MCHS• Jan. 31 at 11:45am. (This is during class time, so please clear with your teachers.) If you are planning to attend El Camino this fall, you can take advantage of this on-campus testing session. To take the test you must have an El Camino College student ID number (you receive this ID number when you apply to El Camino College). Seating is limited; please sign up on Naviance for a spot.
· College Representative Visits In The CCC – If visit is during class please get teacher permission to attend. This is an opportunity to learn about your schools of interest and meet the admission counselors. View all visits and sign up to attend on NAVIANCE.

· LOCAL EVENT -Third Annual Bi-Partisan, Multi-District Service Academy Day hosted by the Office of Congressman Ted W. Lieu! This informative event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 from 1:00-4:00pm at the Los Angeles Air Force Base, Gordon Conference Center, 400 North Douglas Street, El Segundo, CA 90245. The purpose of this event is to bring together service academy officials, current service academy students and parents, prospective service academy students and parents, and multiple congressional offices. Representatives from the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Academy will be in attendance to deliver brief presentations and to answer student and parent questions. Additionally, prospective students can engage with current students during a student-led panel, and prospective parents can engage with current parents during a parent panel. Students will also have ample time to connect with their respective congressional office to learn of specific application requirements. · SoCalRoc: SoCal Roc is now enrolling for the Spring 2018 semester. Classes begin January 29. The SoCalRoc Counselor is available in the CCC every Monday from 8:30 – 10:30 am. Please sign up in the CCC to meet with her or drop in for more information about SoCalRoc class offerings.
